We were delighted to meet Fred Hamilton, his wife Joan and their daughter Marnie at the Wednesday night meeting. They are the immediate descendants of Fred Hamilton, for whom our largest park is named. Fred got in touch with us a couple of months ago in response to our “Who’s Fred Hamilton” T-shirt campaign! Hearing about the elder Hamilton directly from his son and other family members gave us a much greater sense of this former athlete turned alderman and then city controller (similar to today’s deputy mayor). We were impressed by stories of his tough competitive spirit combined with his compassion for all the city’s residents, regardless of their backgrounds at a time when the city was much more culturally divided and puritanical. We look forward to staying in touch with the family and learning more about Mr. Hamilton’s legacy not only in regard to our park, but also in building our great city.
Other highlights from the meeting:
- Construction on the two ramps leading from Roxton Road into the Fred Hamilton Park will begin within 2 weeks
- U of T Forest Conservation students and FoRRP agreed to collaborate on developing an Urban Forest Management Plan for the neighbourhood including our parks and adjacent streets
- A 2013 park calendar featuring historic photographs will be available for sale soon
